Priya is sitting in her room deep in thought. Pihu’s engagement went off well everyone appreciated all the arrangements that were made. She is looking at the pictures on her laptop and a lone tear escapes her right eye. She wipes it absentmindedly as she continues to look at the pictures.
She raises her shoulders as she sighs deeply. She purses her lips and smiles slowly as she remembers the ceremonies from the day before. She talks to herself: I wonder what was so important that Mr. Kapoor had to leave soon after the engagement. If I had known he had plans to go I would have asked him to take me with him. I was hoping we could have a quiet dinner together on my birthday; but now I don’t think he will even be here. I want to spend some time alone with him and now that I am also a bit free it would have been a good time to go with him. I wonder if he remembers that my birthday is tomorrow. Sigh!
Her thoughts are abruptly interrupted by the loud ringing of the phone. She goes to her bedside to answer the phone: Hello!
Her eyes widen and she raises her hand and rubs her forehead. Tears roll down her cheeks and she drops down on her bed: How is he now? What happened? How bad was it? Can I talk to him? I want to see him Vikram. Please book a ticket for me to go there as soon as possible? What was he doing in Kanyakumari? Tears keep flowing down her cheeks like tiny rivulets in spate. She puts the phone down and dials a number and hears the message that she doesn’t want to at this moment – “the number you have dialed has been switched off”. She gets up and with one hand on her hip and the other on her forehead; she paces up and down her room.
Pihu helped pack a small suitcase and tried her best to calm her mother. No amount of words from anyone helped her. Her eyes were swollen from constant tears and the kohl from her eyes formed black streaks along her cheeks. Her hair was disheveled and she was a mess. “Oh God! Please be with him and make him alright. Let this be a nightmare and help me wake up from it as soon as possible,” she kept uttering these words again and again. Natasha came to her room and held her real tight and tried to calm her down but was unsuccessful. She took her face in her arms and forced her to look into her eyes.
Nutz: Priya, look at what you have done to yourself! Bhai is going to be fine; how can anything go wrong with him when you are there? Believe me he is alright; just go and be with him and all will be okay. Trust me Priya. Saying this she helps wipe her face and freshen up before she leaves for the airport. She rushes down the stairs and doesn’t make eye contact with anyone as she gets into the car. She cannot face anyone at this point. She recollects the phone call from Vikram “Priya, Ram has been admitted in the hospital. I just got a call from the doctor. He is asking for you and you need to leave for Kanyakumari immediately”
At the Mumbai Domestic Airport where Priya is getting ready to board the flight, all sorts of horrible thoughts cross her mind – the plane crash; the bullet wound and the time when he loses consciousness on seeing her alive keep flashing past in continued succession.
The scene shifts to an ocean-side cottage on the sands of Kanyakumari – the place where the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean meet. The sun is slowly descending into the ocean and the living room in the cottage is dimly lit. Ram is sitting in a recliner in a pair of jeans and a polo T-shirt with a phone to his ear.
Ram: Vikram, I have made arrangements for her to be picked up from the airport and brought straight to the cottage. I am just making sure our home is ready to welcome her owner and I sincerely hope she likes this place. I have been working on this for the past two months and I want everything to be perfect.
Vikram: It had better be Ram; she is very worried and in a terrible state of shock. I sincerely hope this prank of yours will be worth it. I just couldn’t bear to see her and from what Choti told me; she was really very very upset. Before she appreciates anything you had better be prepared for a long lecture from her – after all her teacher skills will not be in vain.
Ram has a wide grin on his face: Arrey yaar! I am all prepared for anything she says because after she sees the surprise she is going to love it. I think it will be all worth it. Chal, I am going to hang up now; she should be here almost at the stroke of midnight. I’m glad the flight timings are also suitable for this prank I have played. Bye Vikram.
Ram hangs the call and sees to the final arrangement of the cottage and their room where the main surprise is there. The room is decorated with flowers and candles and a cake is kept on the table with written on it “HAPPY BIRTHDAY DARLING”. Priya’s flight has landed and ram’s driver has come to take her to the cottage. Priya comes out of the flight in 15 minutes and his driver is giving ram updates about it. Priya comes out and he cuts the call.
Priya: Shankar! What is all this all of a sudden? Where is ram? Why has he called me here? Why hasn’t he come to pick me up? Why did he send you?
Shankar: madam! Please cool down. Don’t be so hyper. Sir is waiting for you. I will drop you there and you can ask these questions to sir.
Priya: ya sorry!
Shankar: its ok mam
Priya reaches the cottage. Priya goes inside the cottage. Ram comes out of the cottage in a hurry so that he can cover her eyes with a cloth. Ram comes out.
Ram: priya u came. Wow that’s great.
Priya: ram what is all this? All of a sudden u are calling me here and you didn’t care to come to the airport to receive me. You sent your driver. What is all this ram?
Ram: I am sorry priya. But please understand. You will love it when u see it.
RAM: plzzzz Priya yaar…..just follow me naa…I promise u'll love it….plzzzzz darling!!!!!
PRIYA: (thinking …inke kya ho gaya hai…achanak se itne romantic kaise ho gaye…kahin kuch toh gadbad hai….)
RAM: Priya..priyaaaaaaaa tum sunn rahi hoo…plzzz kabhi toh meri baat maann lia karo…kam se kam leap year mein ek baar….grinning cheekily
PRIYA: MR. Kapoorrrrrrrr….kya kaha aapne…main aapki baat nahi manti….jao abb toh u have to work extraaa hard to make me go along with you…huhh!!
Ram glancing at his watch sees the time that it’s just 10 mins. To 12….thinks abb toh kuch karna padega jaldi…soch beta ram kaise manayega mrs. Darling hitler ko….IDEA!! Toh tum pakka nahi chal rahi hoo
PRIYA: 100 percent
RAM: thik hai toh phir I don’t mind helping myself…
Quickly goes close to her….his warm breath falling on her face…making her lose her mind…. Ram realizing Priya's state quickly blindfolds her ..picks her up and starts moving inside…..Priya lost in his scent just holds on to him….waiting eagerly for her “just turned Mr romantics hubby “ s surprise for her
Finally ram reaches inside the room beautifully decorated for her dear wife’s first birthday with him….scented candles….balloons …her favourite red roses….a birthday cake of heart shape ….and of course a veryyyy specialll gift for her beautiful lady
RAM puts her down and makes her stand safely very close to him…keeps staring at her beautiful , innocent face….all mesmerized and lost in her angels face…..while Priya just keeps standing there quietly blindfolded waiting patiently for her hubby to do something…
A loud striking of the wall clock brought RAM back from his dreamland……he quickly goes close to her ear and in his husky…manly voice whispers
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY…MY DARLING WIFE” and removes her blindfold
PRIYA slowly opens her eyes totally surprised by the surprise…and is mesmerized seeing the room beautifully decorated……..she looks around for RAM and finds him bending on his knees right in front of her with a beautifully crafted ring in his hand extended towards her….before she speaks ram starts
RAM: a veryyy veryyyy HAPPY BIRTHDAY to u my lady….I feel extremely lucky and blessed to be the first one to wish u on such an important day of your life….I had always thought that I was not soo much lucky in my life that I will get a soul mate…whom I could love from the bottom of my heart. And who would love me back…with whom I will share all my sorrows and happiness of my life….whom I can call as only mine….who would walk hand in hand with me though all the walks of my life…good or bad…had given up all my hopes of finding a special someone for me….but God didn’t discriminate …and see I got that special someone…though late but obviously the very best whom I want to treasure and cherish forever in my life….Priya I was never good at expressing my feelings but hope u understand what u mean to me…..I cannot live without u…and on ur BIRTHDAY I want to make u feel like a queen…QUEEN OF MY HEARTS…will u give me the pleasure…I LOVE U DARLING….
Ram extended the ring towards her waiting for the nod
PRIYA was too overwhelmed too say anything….all her life had been lonely and now the time had finally come that she too can say that she has got the rajkumar of her life…not in a state to talk she just nodded happily with her teary eyes and extended her hands towards ram
Ram quickly got up and slid the simple yet elegant ring in her beautiful finger and hugged her tightly expressing the depths of his love for her….
After eternity...they separated…..RAM took her face between his hands and spoke
“Let the show begin MY DARLING ..HAPPY BIRTHDAY yet again” he spoke as he took her lips in his for a passionate and soul stirring kiss…..
Tears of joy streaming down her soft cheeks like tiny rivulets; for once she is speechless, completely taken by surprise – a pleasant surprise at her Prince Charming’s gesture.
“I’m on the top of the world
Looking down on creation;
And the only explanation I can see
Is the love that I’ve found;
Ever since you’ve been around
Your love’s put me at the top of the world!”
Priya breaks off from his arms for a brief moment; only to be drawn again into his arms against his broad chest listening to the most favorite sounds – the music to her ears; the dhak-dhak of his heart! She raises her face to look into his eyes as her face turns a deep crimson: Mr. Kapoor thank you for making ….
He does not let her complete her sentence and silences her with a deep kiss and after a bit: Arrey yaar! There’s no time for formalities. The smile on your face, the tears of joy and the surprised look in your eyes make it all worthwhile. I want this day to be the best day in your life until now and I promise to keep you happy for the rest of our days together. Your next twenty-four hours are going to be mine and mine alone so let us not waste a moment.
He holds her by the shoulders and walks her to the bed and makes her sit down: Wait for a minute; I have something else for you.
Saying this he walks to the table and brings a set of books tied together in a green satin ribbon and places it in her lap as he sits beside her: Your birthday is supposed to be a happy time; but I think this little gift is going to cause you some pain but again I promise to be with you and share it all with you. You have been my inspiration and role model Priya and these are memories – both happy and sad; of the past seven years that you were physically not by my side; but were with me all the time. Not even for a brief moment did I think that you were not going to come back. I penned every thought, every small dream I had in these seven books and I want to gift to you the last seven years. If you don’t want to read it now…..
Priya put her hand against his mouth to stop him from saying anything else: I would love to live the past seven years with you and catch up on all the missed time. I cannot believe that you have been writing a journal for the past seven years – that’s another big surprise for me.
Ram: Okay then, wait a minute; I will us some hot adrak chai so we can stay awake and read them together.
Both of them walk together into the kitchen and while Ram is making the chai; she is standing beside him playing with her mangalsutra with one hand staring adorably into his eyes while the smile that started off as a slight curve of her lips slowly turns into a full-blown grin. He looks at her with his big wide eyes and rubs his hands like an excited child. He carries the tray to their bedroom and sets it down by her bedside.
He lifts a cup with his hands and takes it to her mouth: Here; take a sip and tell me how it is.
She shakes her head from side to side: Oh no! You take a sip and give it back to me. That way I know for sure my cup of tea will be very good.
Both giggle like two teenagers as they take a sip from each other’s cup and they settle down with the journals. They spend the next few hours pouring through the journals punctuated with their smiles, tears, laughter, and constant chattering. It is almost daybreak as they put down the last journal and Ram looks at his watch.
He jumps out of bed and rushes to her side: Now for the next surprise; I am going to have to blindfold you all over again.
Priya smiles: What? Again! Where are you taking me now Mr. Kapoor?
Ram: Patience my dear Mrs. Kapoor – have patience! He holds her by the shoulders and walks her to the patio outside their bedroom and makes her sit on the garden swing. The sky is orange with streaks of grey clouds waiting for the sun to make its appearance over the horizon. The waters of the ocean are still a dark grey waiting for the light of their lives to brighten their day.
He sits beside her and slides his arm over her back and slowly unties the scarf around her eyes: Now slowly open your eyes.
She snuggles into his arms as she slowly opens her eyes and just as though the sun is taking its cues from her; appears slowly like a bright orange ball, rising above the horizon giving them a silent preview of its shape and glory before it comes out of its rest into a bright ball of fire unable to be seen by the naked eye. She is amazed at the view of the sun rising over the ocean and looks around trying to soak in the beauty of the sun rise from under the ocean in all its grandeur.
Ram: Happy birthday to my Soul Priya! I want to spend the rest of my life with you by my side; never letting you leave me even for a moment. The past years have had its good and bad; but now I want to make sure that we have only happiness and more happiness together. I don’t think I said this to you in a while – I love you Mrs. Kapoor and I love you very much!
Let us leave them as they spend the rest of the day – the rest of their lives in bliss together. May the sun continue to shine on them forever and ever!
